Getting ready for Santa on Thursday.
Coming up on Saturday, August 23rd from 9am-1:00pm is DCPS Beautification Day. This year, DCPS reports over 4,000 volunteers from surrounding communities have signed up to spruce up neighborhood schools to prepare students for a great first day of school.
For those of you who don’t know, the local in-boundary school for Mount a Vernon Triangle is the Walker Jones Education Campus. Join Principal Moss, Kids in the Triangle (KITT) members, and volunteers from the Triangle to help our kids get ready for their first day of school. Also, come see the urban farm!
In the last couple of weeks a mural was painted inside 5th Street Ace Hardware and new signs have been installed at Capital City Wine & Spirits and The Cloakroom. In the process of installing the new Cloakroom sign the final remaining Louis Rogue sign was removed from the SE corner of 5th and K.
The Walmart at 1st and H Streets NW opened this morning at 8am. I stopped in for a few minutes and did a lap through the store before work. As expected it looks like a typical generic Walmart inside but smaller. The highlight was the Dunbar High School band playing at the opening event.
The building at 315 K Street has undergone some exterior (and possibly interior) renovations. The second floor of this property most recently was leased by World Class Cuts which moved to 401 K Street last winter.
Gone is the barbershop striped door that formerly presented the entrance to World Class Cuts. The old purple awning for the long-gone Dollar City & Up is removed. The spastic paint scheme of faded whites and reds combined with a bright yellow is now replace with a muted neutral yellow.
The Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District (MVTCID) held their second annual Photos with Santa event beneath the Lift Off sculpture at 5th & K last night. I was told the event was so successful that Bill had to walk back to the office to retrieve an additional sign-up sheet midway through. The photostream has been uploaded to Facebook this morning.
Reader Shipsa01 sent us an interesting old Year 2000 Neighborhood Map originally created by Jonathan Passonneau and Partners. Below is a screen capture of the Mount Vernon Triangle portion and by clicking through you can see a larger version of this photo. What differences can you spot?
In 2009 we had a series of historical Google Earth and Microsoft Local Live aerials of the neighborhood.
Major progress is visible at both the Yale West at 437 New York Ave NW and The SeVerna on the unit block of L Street NW. The Yale West hi-rise had it’s masonry skin and windows installed late last year while the the wooden frames are presently being erected for the townhome portion of the SeVerna project.
