Mount Vernon Triangle Market

The Liberty North Community Market at 5th & I ceased operations in July. The market was unable to gain momentum under the operations of Chef Kenac. The Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District (MVTCID) reviewed responses to their RFP and has selected Diverse Market Management to serve as market manager. The market could be relaunched as soon as Sunday August 28th under the branding of the Mount Vernon Triangle Market.

You may remember that Diverse Market Management was affiliated with a past attempt to run a market on Mount Vernon Square. That arrangement came undone over DCRA permitting issues.

Liberty Market on Hiatus

The Liberty North Community Market is on hiatus until a new market operator can be secured. The market ran each weekend for the last several months at the 5th & I parking lot.

In early June the Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District (MVTCID) issued a RFP for a new market manager. Below is a statement issued today from the MVTCID about the market’s hiatus:

“The public market at 5th and Eye Streets, NW will be closed while the city works out an agreement with the new management company. We hope the market will be up and running on Sundays in September, if not before.”

Another Liberty Market Update

Chef Kenac’s assistant sent me a partial list of the vendors to attend the market this Saturday.

  • Old City Green – Strawberries-Fruits/GardenHerbs
  • Worthwhile Meats – Specialty Pork Turnip Green Sausages/Summer Veggies La Grecque
  • Tofu Delights – Prepared Vegetarian Foods
  • Inspired Occasions – Homemade Granola
  • Cake Dulce – Pastries-Desserts-CakePops
  • Victoria Lai – Homemade Ice Cream
  • Fresh Confectioners – Artisan Sweets-Confections

Bad news is that Overlook Farm, which presumably was the larger produce provider, will not be attending the market this weekend afterall.

Liberty North Market will have Produce on Saturday

The Liberty North Community Market at 5th and I Streets NW will have produce this Saturday June 25th. The market runs from 10-4pm both days on the weekend. But the farmer’s market is only on Saturday and the farmers may not stay until the end of the market if they either sell out of product or business is slow. So come early on Saturday.

We’ve all clamored for produce and now is the time to step up and support the market. Produce is not a high markup item so the farmer’s need volume business to make participating in our community market worth their while. A jewelry vendor may only need to sell three pieces to have a good day. The Liberty North market manager Chef Kenac urged at this weeks’ MVSNA meeting that a farmer needs hundreds of transactions.

Kenac also stated that the market will feature a meat vendor and pantry items like pickles and cheeses this weekend. I’ve pressed for more specifics on the food vendors and will post if he passes them along.

First Impression for Liberty North Market?

What were your impressions of last weekend’s Liberty North Community Market? The market continues this weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

The critical mass of vendors surpassed my expectation. I wasn’t surprised by the focus on crafts and clothing accessories but nonetheless that is never gonna be my scene. I did purchase dinner on Sunday at The Tender Rib truck to do my part to support the market with commerce.

Liberty North Community Market press release

The below is a press release update on the new Liberty North Community Market that will begin the first weekend of April in the parking lot at 5th & Eye.

(Washington, D.C.) – The Liberty North Community Market, a new public market at 5thand Eye Street, NW, will open on April 2nd and operate Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00-6:00 p.m. every weekend. The market is located on the site of the future Arts at 5th and Eye Hotel, to be developed by Donohoe Development.

“We are very excited to sponsor the Liberty North Community Market on our site,”said developer Jad Donohoe. “The market will activate this burgeoning neighborhood until we are ready to start construction of the hotel.”

The Liberty North Community Market will feature arts, crafts, produce, prepared foods, and home improvement goods. More than 80 local vendors have been identified to make this market a unique location for shopping and dining, including an award winning fashion designer, metal worker, Asian produce, and a hand-crafted chocolate maker.

“We are revolutionizing the way people think about public markets,” declared Chef Kenac, market manager. “We are clustering artists together so that there is more synergy between creative people. Artist will be paired under a gazebo to create an inviting, gallery-like atmosphere that protects their works from the elements.”

The Liberty North Community Market derives it name from the historic Northern Liberties Market that operated for 120 years in the neighborhood. Its first location was on Mount Vernon Square in 1846 and then it expanded to 5th and K Streets, NW in 1874 –where Safeway is today. The market burned in 1946 and finally closed in the 1960s. The area north of Massachusetts Avenue, NW was considered beyond the civilized part of town in the early 19th century – hence the moniker “Northern Liberties.”

Liberty North Community Market is produced by Chef Kenac Productions and is sponsored by ANC6C, Donohoe Development, the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development’s office, and MVTCID. To learn more about the market or become a vendor, visit www.libertynorthcommunitymarket.com.

Liberty North Community Market

Beginning the weekend of April 2nd the new Liberty North Community Market will launch its spring season. The open air market will operate on Saturdays and Sundays at the parking lot at 5th & I Streets NW.  An extensive fine arts and crafts section along with a variety of other vendors should make this a great outdoor market.

The market will be operated by Chef Kenac Productions – who was behind a daily daytime a market that ran for two weeks at City Center DC in September 2010. The Mount Vernon Triangle Community Improvement District, Donohoe Development and ANC6C are the primary sponsors of the Liberty North Community Market.

The website for the market currently is focused on attracting vendors. Hopefully closer to the grand opening they will market the website more towards potential patrons.
