Police Week 2014

This week is National Police Week. Each year tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world converge on Washington, DC to participate in a number of planned events which honor those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice. The Fraternal Order of Police lodge at 711 4th Street NW and the National Law Enforcement Memorial on the 400 block of E Street NW are major centers of activities during the week’s schedule.

National Law Enforcement Memorial – Police Week 2014

As part of National Police Week the National Law Enforcement Memorial is adorned with wreaths, flowers, and pictures to tribute federal, state and local law enforcers killed in the line of duty. This is a great time to stroll through, soak it in and pay respects.

Capital Bikeshare station at 4th & E NW finally arrives

The Capital Bikeshare station at 4th & E NW, which was part of the original proposal, finally was installed this past Saturday. The initial delay was due to the fact a SmartBike station occupied the space and needed to be phased out. That Smart Bike station was removed a few months ago.

The only Penn Quarter CaBi station still yet to arrive from the original plan is the 7th Street NW/Navy Memorial station.

2009 National Police Week

Be aware that 2009 National Police Week runs from Monday May 10th to Saturday May 16th (schedule of events).

National Police Week, which occurs each year during the week in which May 15 falls, recognizes the service and sacrifice of U.S. law enforcement. Established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962, National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

While a noble and worthy event, from a Downtown resident perspective the event has a history of issues. A significant number of out of town police officers behave like they are on spring break and, ironically, above the law. Among other things, be prepared for drag racing, illegal parking in various forms (alleys, in no parking zones, or motorcycles on sidewalks), public urination, and other anti-social behavior.
