MVT Retail Survey Results

Results are now available for the Mount Vernon Triangle Retail Survey conducted by the MVT CID. The survey concluded on June 4th and fielded 340 respondents that answered 26 questions regarding their demographics and consumer spending habits. Eighty six percent of the respondents were residents of our MVT neighborhood.

Below are screen captures of 3 slides from the presentation that I found noteworthy.

Texas de Brazil to 455 Mass

220px-Tdbrazil-logoWe hinted back in early March that Texas de Brazil was rumored to be the new tenant for the former Buddha Bar location at 455 Mass. Today the Washington Business Journal confirms that Texas de Brazil has executed a lease for the space.

Texas de Brazil is a Brazilian-American “churrascaria” or steakhouse that combines the cuisines of Southern Brazil with Texan style meats. Patrons instruct servers by turning a piece of paper green side up to get meat or turn it to the red side to no longer receive meat.

Buddha Bar Online Auction

Buddha Bar at 455 Mass abruptly closed nearly two years ago. Much of kitchenware and decor, including the 12ft gold Buddha statue, has sat untouched since the former restaurant/lounge shuttered. This week Rasmus Auctioneers selling all of their stuff from the front of the house like the ornate chandeliers and dining chairs that created that “upscale oriental” ambiance. The kitchen equipment includes items ranging from rice warmers and wok pans to glassware, tea pots, and bar equipment. You can access the auction here.

People can go check everything out (and possibly contemplate how to get that giant Buddha out the door) Thursday from 12-4 at the Mass Ave location. The online auction starts to close Friday, March 14, 2014 at 2:07pm.

I did get a tip on email that Texas de Brazil may be in talks to sign a lease on this space. I have no idea how credible this is.

Has Buddha Bar Closed?

Eater DC reports that Buddha Bar at 455 Mass may have abruptly closed for business permanently.

While I didn’t express this openly on the blog when Buddha Bar first opened I always had my doubts it was a good fit for the neighborhood. It wants to be a club but no other clubs are near by. The atmosphere was about dim lighting and DJ’s which was incompatible with the 180 seat patio and thus that generous outdoor space was left largely ignored. It may not happen overnight, but if Buddha Bar is done for business I think a better option will arrive and we’ll be better off for it.

Subway Cafe Opens on Nov 30

The new Subway Cafe at 455 Massachusetts Ave NW will open on Tuesday November 30th. The “Cafe” concept has different offerings from the traditional Subway including gelato, panini sandwiches, WiFi, Seattle’s Best Coffee, and Thomas English Muffins. The general look and feel is very similar to the Subway Cafe at Eisenhower Ave in Alexandria.

The hours of operation are planned to be 7am to 10pm weekdays with slightly later openings and earlier closing times on the weekends.

Subway Cafe

At the beginning of March we reported that Subway Cafe would be leasing the last remaining space at 455 Mass and open late summer 2010. The first question that popped in our minds was what’s the difference between a Subway and a Subway Cafe? Research suggested that the Cafe concept offered more amenities (Wi-Fi, flat screen TVs), a broader menu (gelato, panini sandwiches, Thomas English muffins, Seattle’s best coffee) and what some described as more stylish decor (couches, dark wood). Recently I was in Alexandria and decided to visit the first Subway Cafe on Eisenhower Avenue to see for myself.

PRWeb on Buddha Bar

Came across a few interesting tidbits about Buddha Bar on a PRWeb release.

Excerpts:

“My partners, Michael Don, Beni Golani, Dov Kliger, and I are excited to have the opportunity to open a Buddha-Bar in the nation’s capital,” said Eran Gorev, CEO of Washington Restaurants LLC. “We spent the past two years looking at dozens of possible locations for the restaurant, but had a hard time finding a venue with ceilings high enough to accommodate our lavish chandeliers and 18-foot signature Buddha. We love the location at 455 Massachusetts Avenue, with the 22-foot high ceilings in an up-and-coming part of town, close to the Washington Convention Center, Chinatown and the US Capitol.”
