Washingtonian Pizza Pool
The Washingtonian has an ongoing Pizza Pool featuring a 32 contender tournament style bracket to determine the best pizza in the Washington area. Today semi-final voting
on the final two is being conducted to determine the winner who will challenge Red Rocks in the finals. The matchup is Ella’s of Penn Quarter versus Flippin Pizza which is new to the market and has several locations in the Virginia suburbs.
I’ve tried the Reston location of Flippin Pizza and was underwhelmed. Nothing I would consider standout about it and the pepperoni’s only being the size of a quarter and curled up at the edges is a major negative to me. How a suburban chain joint that’s only been in the area a short time and hasn’t even developed enough of a cult following to garner many Yelp reviews steam roll the institution that is the Italian Store in the quarterfinals? Turns out the success of Flippin in the Pizza Pool is most likely due to more aggressive campaigning for votes than the quality of their product. Flippin’s twitter followers from NYC and Cali were steered towards voting in the Washingtonian pool. I suppose that’s not completely out of bounds for the contest but it doesn’t bring clarity to who serves the best pie in DC. No matter who wins I can clearly say Flippin would not be in my top 10.
