Eric Ziebold to Open New Restaurant at 1015 7th Street NW

Big news this week is that Eric Ziebold has signed a lease to open a new restaurant in the former Alpertson’s furniture building at 1015 7th Street NW. Ziebold is best known for being the executive chef of the highly acclaimed CityZen restaurant in the Mandarin Oriental hotel in SW DC. Over the years Ziebold has received recognition nationally from organizations such as the James Beard Foundation and Food & Wine magazine. Years before rising to Executive Chef Ziebold gained experience at The French Laundry in Yountville, CA which has 3 Michellin stars and has been twice named best restaurant in the world.

It is estimated that the target date for opening would be Q2 of 2015. No word yet on specifics plans for the restaurant’s concept. Perhaps the chef will eventually shed some light on that topic via his @EricZiebold twitter account.

Let's pretend they spelled "Vacation" right

Let’s pretend they spelled “Vacation” right

Sixth Engine will offer special road trip menu items each weekend this month. According to latest tweet from @SixthEngine The Carolinas will be their first stop on the culinary tour. You would think pulled pork would be a natural Carolinas item…

Expect future regional menu items from Southern California, Maine and the Great Lakes. Eater DC suggests the offerings will include a Double Double Animal Style, Frogmore Stew, lobster rolls, Chicago-style hot dogs and more. The regional food items will be accompanied by beers and drinks to complement the virtual vacation experience.

Texas de Brazil to 455 Mass

220px-Tdbrazil-logoWe hinted back in early March that Texas de Brazil was rumored to be the new tenant for the former Buddha Bar location at 455 Mass. Today the Washington Business Journal confirms that Texas de Brazil has executed a lease for the space.

Pour Me a Glass of Rioja

A few readers have noticed the liquor license placard in the ground floor retail space of the Lyric Apartments for a new wine shop. Grand Cata, A Latino Wine Co. (@LatinoWineCo) is a wine service company operating in the DC metropolitan area. Founded in Washington, DC in 2011, Grand Cata specializes in Latin American wines, wine education and events. This storefront would be their first retail location. Earlier this week we also learned The Lyric at 440 K St NW may be attracting a bakery as tenant.

Could we be running the risk of over saturation in wine businesses? Will Grand Cata offer an experience distinct enough to thrive with competition from Safeway, the very recently opened Eye Street Cellars and the smaller corner liquor stores in MVT?
