Penn Commons (facebook | twitter), from the Passion Food Hospitality Group, is set to open on Saturday August 2nd Monday August 4th (editor’s note: Penn Commons facebook and twitter had conflicting dates). The restaurant at the 700 Sixth Street NW space next to the Verizon Center looks totally ready to go. Signage is in place, tables set, and even menus posted in the windows beside the front door.

MVT Retail Survey Results

Results are now available for the Mount Vernon Triangle Retail Survey conducted by the MVT CID. The survey concluded on June 4th and fielded 340 respondents that answered 26 questions regarding their demographics and consumer spending habits. Eighty six percent of the respondents were residents of our MVT neighborhood.

Below are screen captures of 3 slides from the presentation that I found noteworthy.

Current MVTCID leadership has put results from their initial MVT Perception Survey and their more recent Farmer’s Market Survey into action. Those surveys proved very instructive into securing a new FreshFarm food market at 5th & K that will begin June 7th and run throughout the summer each Saturday morning.

Texas de Brazil to 455 Mass

220px-Tdbrazil-logoWe hinted back in early March that Texas de Brazil was rumored to be the new tenant for the former Buddha Bar location at 455 Mass. Today the Washington Business Journal confirms that Texas de Brazil has executed a lease for the space.

Texas de Brazil is a Brazilian-American “churrascaria” or steakhouse that combines the cuisines of Southern Brazil with Texan style meats. Patrons instruct servers by turning a piece of paper green side up to get meat or turn it to the red side to no longer receive meat.

Pour Me a Glass of Rioja

A few readers have noticed the liquor license placard in the ground floor retail space of the Lyric Apartments for a new wine shop. Grand Cata, A Latino Wine Co. (@LatinoWineCo) is a wine service company operating in the DC metropolitan area. Founded in Washington, DC in 2011, Grand Cata specializes in Latin American wines, wine education and events. This storefront would be their first retail location. Earlier this week we also learned The Lyric at 440 K St NW may be attracting a bakery as tenant.

Could we be running the risk of over saturation in wine businesses? Will Grand Cata offer an experience distinct enough to thrive with competition from Safeway, the very recently opened Eye Street Cellars and the smaller corner liquor stores in MVT?

Baked & Wired to 440K?

bakedandwiredAccording to Shaun Courtney of District Source, the owners of the popular Georgetown bakery Baked & Wired are negotiating a lease for ~4000 SF of retail space at The Lyric at 440 K Street NW. This new location would focus less on cupcakes and the sweets of the original location and more on breads and coffee.

This is more than the typical wishful thinking rumor mill stuff – Courtney’s article has no shortage of direct quotes from the owners in her article about their interest in Mount Vernon Triangle and the potential new concept. A new bread oven is currently being shipped in from France!

Presumably this new bakery would operate in the Tenant A space from the retail plat map. Berkeley Shervin of The Wilkes Company has been touting the Tenant C space as part of the eventual restoration of Prather’s Alley (4/5 down the page in the article) as a destination rather than a service corridor.

At first, the damage was limited to the inside of the buildings, but shortly after 4PM, the third floor of the club collapsed into the second floor. This News 4 NBC Washington article has a slide show that includes a brief video of the moment the 3rd floor crumbled down. The video is also on facebook.

Eye Street Cellars Now Open

Eye Street Cellars is now open at 425 Eye Street NW. The store is large and spacious. It is possible all 3 of Tunnel Liquors, Capital City Wine & Spirits and Schneiders might be able to fit inside this store.  Eye Street Cellars is still under soft open and while the selection is presently ample it will fill out with more options soon.

I spoke briefly with wine director Michel Dumas. Wines will be sorted on the shelves by varietal and secondarily by price rather than by country. I learned from Michel of their facebook page and their planned upcoming free wine tastings. The first event takes place Wednesday April 30th from 5pm to 7:30pm 5:30-7:00PM as guest Donald Moffat will offer tastings of Italian wines from Vinifera Imports.
