UPDATE 11/16/2014 – City Center DC has confirmed that the public dog park will be open by mid-week. They are still finalizing the hours and actual open date. This post will be updated when the grand opening is finalized.
Representatives from City Center DC have given details to The Mt. Vernon Triangle Blog about the mystery dog park. A City Center Dog park will open to the public at 10th St, NW between New York Ave and I. This will be an 8 minute walk for Triangle residents (.4 miles away from 5th and K). The convenience of this location cannot be denied. The park will be managed and operated by City Center DC’s Common Area Association . The question is, how will City Center amenities compare to the Shaw Dog Park?
In other dog park news, show your support Saturday, November 15th for the Shaw Dog Park’s 6th Annual Anniversary Party. From 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, grab your people and paw pals to celebrate with this neighborhood fixture. Count on refreshments, t-shirts for sale, and prizes donated by local businesses. Shaw Dog Park, located at 1673 11th Street NW, has boasting rights of DC’s “first official public dog park,” managed by the Shaw Dog Park Association in cooperation with the DC Department of Parks and Rec. For Triangle residents, its an 18 minute walk (.8 miles away from 5th and K). Weekday hours are 7:00 am – 10:00 pm and weekend hours run 8:00 am – 10:00 pm.
If you’ve visited the Shaw Dog Park, you’ve experienced its amenities: well maintained Astro turf, comfy benches and chairs for owners, a water fountain, and plastic baggies galore. Plus, it’s centrally located for the U Street/Shaw/Dupont folks can’t be beat….for now.
If plans for the City Center dog park are as luxe as the human offerings, the Dog Park at City Center will be the hottest new pet spot in Downtown DC. For now, the park is a fenced-in dirt tract not yet open to the public. Park capacity will be capped at 10 dogs at any one time. We’ve contacted Property Management at City Center for details on when the park will open, its hours, and what amenities will be offered. Cheers to City Center for allowing access to the surrounding neighborhood.
