I joined the Mount Vernon Triangle blog in the spring of 2008, about a month before moving into my condo in the neighborhood. This blog was started in January 2008 by a prospective resident who was excited that he was under contract for a studio at the Dumont Condominiums. He used the pen name of Mediocre Bad Guy (aka MBG) and created the tagline Not Just Parking Lots Anymore. I joined as a contributor three months later as I was similarly enthusiastic about my new condo purchase at Madrigal Lofts. I began writing under the name FourthandEye. As the Dumont hit hardship and went into bankruptcy MBG slowly disappeared from the scene leaving the reigns fully to me. Those first several years I averaged nearly a post of day reporting on items ranging from development news, restaurant openings, single sales moratorium and whatever was on the docket at ANC meetings. My level of posting has waned the last few years but I was always there to share and report the biggest news items in Mount Vernon Triangle.
Now comes the time for me to turn the page and hand off the baton to new voices in the neighborhood. Newly married and planning a future with my wife (aka Taste the Triangle) we began to assess what we really want and need out of life. We truly remain fond of the neighborhood. The close by proximity to Vida, Safeway and even big bad Walmart made our lives easier. Alba Osteria and Wiseguys Pizza were our latest favorite spots and we were certain the upcoming bakery at the Lyric from the Baked & Wired owners and Bistro Francais would become new beloved treasures.
But our urge for more space, a chef’s kitchen and private outdoor area won out over the endless amenities and hustle and bustle of downtown hi-rise living. While a passion for being in a walkable neighborhood will always burn deep for us we’re thankful the District has many different flavors of that dish. We will be close to the burgeoning Atlas District of H Street NE and hope to eventually ride the new streetcar past Union Station and onward to K Street in the Mount Vernon Triangle.
While this chapter has come to a close for me I’m excited to say that you’ll be left in very good hands. A long time resident, community advocate and realtor has graciously accepted the keys to the porsche. Beginning today with the launch of this rebooted site you’ll see excellent improvements and more frequent activity on the blog. I’m excited about the vision Thais Austin has for the blog and will continue to monitor from a far.
Thank you so much to all of you who have engaged with the blog and the neighborhood, and for giving me the opportunity to talk about a place that has changed so much and continues to have an exciting future. We should all have a big block party when the last surface parking lot is redeveloped.
