The Washington Business Journal reports that Haka Ilhan, who owns Alba Osteria, has signed a lease in the m.flats building at 450 K Street NW. The new restaurant will be named L’Hommage Bistro Francais and will have a range of offerings that include a full-service bistro, a bakery, and a cafe with grab-and-go sandwich counter at lunch. Looks like the upcoming Baked & Wired at 440K will have some baguette competition.
This is a very large 6000+ square foot space for this neighborhood. And as we reported yesterday, Kushi struggled for years to cover operating costs on their large space across the street before finally shuttering. But Ilhan has been very successful with Alba Osteria, and he owns and operates another 20 eateries, so we trust he has a strong plan. Alba Osteria in particular does exceptionally heavy business during weekend brunch and has always been responsive to the desires of the neighborhood with their monthly neighborhood happy hours, weekly dog happy hours, and participation in events like DC Parking day in which they playfully turned street parking spots into a bocce court and pig roast.
Ilhan openly admits to being exceptionally bullish on the Mount Vernon Triangle. He strongly believes in the area’s potential and is considering opening a third restaurant focused on Turkish food in the neighborhood. Rumor has it that it would be in the 425 Eye building.
