Strains of upbeat jazz can be heard as we step through the doors of Joe’s Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab, I feel transported to a different time. The multi-level restaurant space in the old Union Trust Bank Building is outfitted with a striking, solid, classic interior featuring wood, marble, and leather. The maître d’ in his green bowtie greets us. The restaurant is smart casual but I wish I were wearing a 1930s flapper dress.
As we are escorted to our table dozens of waiters decked out in black jackets and bowties stand ready to cater to our every need. The staff is topnotch and for good reason, they interviewed 2000 candidates to get to the 180 staff they have now, just for dinner service. Party service starts the end of the month and lunch will be available come March.
If you look closely you’ll see certain staff members wearing silver lapel pins in the shape of a crab. We asked our waiter, they are for purchase and the money raised goes to an employee emergency fund.
The music level isn’t so high that you can’t hear your companions, but it does make it more difficult to listen in on your neighbors conversations making it a great place to bring a client or date you want to impress.
Stone crab season runs October 15th to May 15th. Fresh stone crabs are found in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. They are hand harvested, one claw at a time, and thrown back to the sea. The crab is returned to the water for the claw to regenerate. In the off season, when supply permits, Joe’s makes stone crab available through a special freezing process.
While known for the stone crab, Joe’s has a vast selection of prime cuts and a’ la cart sides, which include a vast selection of potatoes.
On to the food!
I started with a glass of Tempranillo. Interesting fact: If you are looking for a wine to go with your selection – the staff wearing burgundy bow ties are the wine team.
A complimentary bread basket arrives with a delicious selection from an onion poppy seed roll, raisin rye, a pretzel stick and my personal favorite an herbed biscuit.
BLT Wedge – Generous portion with thick cut crispy bacon, creamy bleu cheese and tomato slices. This will be a perfect lunch salad come March!
Crab Bisque – Light crab flavor will leave you hungry for more crab.
Herb Roasted Chicken – As it arrives at the table the waiter pours chicken jous over the top. The chicken is succulent and perfectly cooked with a nice crispy glacé so juicy and easy to eat.
Large Stone Crab – Fresh and delicious they come pre-cracked for you and are easy to peel, and get those big chunks of crab. Offerings include Medium, Select and Large sized claws. You have the opportunity to wear a crab bib, if you order the crab! Interesting fact: only the Florida and D.C. locations have the bibs. Patrons of the Las Vegas and Chicago locations don’t know what they’re missing!
A’ la Cart Sides (full or half orders available)
Mushroom Mac n’ Cheese comes in the dish it is baked in with big slices of mushroom and giant pasta shells, so creamy and cheesy I wish I had ordered the full size.
Fried Asparagus – crispy breading on the outside with a perfectly cooked inside. It comes with lemon butter sauce that I wanted to pour on everything.
After our dishes are taken away our waiter comes over with fresh lemon to squeeze on our hands and then gives us both a hot towel.
Dessert (full or half orders available)
Key Lime Pie – The pie is served cold and features a nice tang with a graham cracker crust that adds a flavorful texture. A very refreshing way to end the meal.
Chocolate Fudge Pie – Chocolate Heaven without being too rich. An Oreo crust, flour less chocolate cake, chocolate mousse with homemade whip cream and chocolate shavings on top AND there’s hot fudge! So many great textures make this a perfect dessert.
All in all this was a great dining experience. The staff bend over backwards to make it perfect for all the diners, I would highly suggest stopping by for dinner or even a drink at the bar.
