Do you have any photos showing the buildings and trees from ca 1887? Mass Ave was planted with double rows of American linden, on each side of the street, so the paired rows formed long allees over the sidewalks. This landscape was part of 'Boss' Shepherd's improvements in the 1870s according to accounts i read in the archives of MLK Washingtoniana and DC Historical Society.

Our group, Restore Mass Ave, is replanting the double rows from Dupont Circle west to the Naval Observatory. We're also compiling a history of the original landscape. So naturally we're interested in trees planted elsewhere on Mass Avenue. Please reply by posting here or at http://www.RestoreMassAve.org .
