July DNA Meeting

From DNA President Miles Groves:

Please join us for this month’s DNA Meeting scheduled for Tuesday evening (7/14) at Calvary Baptist Church (833 8th Street NW) in the 2nd floor chapel. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. with PSA101W followed by a panel that will focus on the growing needs for urban parks and programming to support downtown residents and visitors. This includes our growing number of families with young children. The panel members need to hear what our needs are, since they are all decision makers or influencers that can impact our quality of life. This is a “must attend” meeting, especially if you have young children. So, please attend and bring your neighbors who have interest in family amenities.

Chinatown Cultural Development Strategy
The Chinatown Cultural Development Strategy Task Force has been meeting for several months. The electronic version of the Strategy and Key Recommendations are already available online for downloading:

Mayor’s Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs and Office of Planning Announced the Draft of Their Strategy and Priority Recommendations for Chinatown

One of the key recommendations concerned the creation of a market to serve the local community. As part of this recommendation, there is a task force focussed on the scope, location, and hours of operation. They need our assistance to aid better understanding of what we are interests are and what we would support. The Office of Planning has asked us to complete a survey. Here’s the Street Market Survey Link to send out to the DNA list serve:

Asian Street Market in Chinatown Survey

Please take the time to complete the survey so that we have a sense of both neighborhood participation and the type of market that will gain our support. It will help if you can get this information distributed via your own list-serves so that we have as broad a reach as possible.

I would absolutely love an Asian market in the neighborhood–the PQ market is great and all, but I'd be thrilled to have a mix of a thriving Dupont weekend market and a mini-cherry blossom street festival. It'd also help counter the prevalent thought that Chinatown is only an anachronistic name for a corporate chain-filled neighborhood.

Makes me wish the Northern Liberties Market was still around! :) An Asian market in Chinatown is a WONDERFUL idea! For me, it would really make it feel more like Chinatown. I hope that one day, our Chinatown will be more like Chinatown in SF, CA or in Chicago vs. Main Street USA in Disney World with Chinese Signs. Don't get me wrong, I don't want what we have to go away (DD did a wonderful job reviving a depressed Chinatown). I just hope that we can bring in a more balanced mix of high-end shopping + Chinese retailers/shopkeepers & throw in an Asian market! If the rents are too high, maybe DC could subsidize for Asian business owners so we can put China back in DC's Chinatown!
